- Title
THE CASE FOR SOCIAL SKILLS TRAINING IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM: A Follow Up Study of Attention and Theory of Mind Skills in First Grade Boys.
- Authors
McGlamery, Mary E.; Ball, Steven E.
- Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if boys originally tested during their kindergarten year had gained in theory of mind (ToM) skills. The original study found that boys, who had poor attentional skills, also had delays in ToM functioning. This study focused only on the ToM skills. Surprisingly, there was a significant decline in second-order theory of mind skills from initial kindergarten testing to first grade. The possibility that a shift in focus from relational to more academic endeavors was responsible for the loss suggests possible revisions to first grade curriculum. The implications for curricular changes are discussed.
