- Abstract
This article presents an introduction to an article written by Rob Guerette that evaluates the U.S. Border Patrol's Border Safety Initiative. The program was created to address the increasing risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the border from Mexico to the U.S. The dangers that many migrants face when crossing the border are illustrated in the film "Babel." Guerette's article points out that certain aspects of the Border Safety Initiative appear to have reduced immigrant deaths, but other humanitarian groups also provide assistance. This article also introduces reaction essays which are critical of the U.S. response to illegal immigration.
