- Abstract
This article discusses the effect of parental incarceration on children. Several studies claim that children of incarcerated parents are victimized and suffer many negative consequences as a result of the incarceration. However, other studies refute such conclusions and find that pre-existing parental conditions, such as mental health problems and substance abuse, are definitely associated with adverse family situations. These studies also find that mere exposure to the criminal justice system can cause deterioration for the children. Analysis has shown the imbalance between the small social benefits of incarcerating nonviolent offenders and the very large social costs suffered.
