- Abstract
The article discusses the shift and volatility of political power in the Caucasus particularly in Kyrgyzstan. The country suffers from political turmoil, ousting the authoritarian leadership of Askar Akayer as well as the corrupt government of Kurmanbek Bakiyev which followed. The ousting of Bakiyev is discussed in terms of Russian instigation, as the country turned the political climate against the former leader. The provisional leadership of Roza Otunbayeva is seen as pro-Russian, and is an extension of Russia's sphere of influence. Russia's utilization of a customs union agreement with Belarus and Kazakhstan to extend its influence is also discussed.
