- Abstract
By definition, individuals granted refugee and asylum status have fled frightening, often traumatic circumstances. Not surprisingly, the prevalence of psychological concerns is elevated among refugee children and adults relative to rates in their host communities. Substantial proportions of refugees and asylum seekers evidence stress‐sensitive psychological disorders such as post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders; in some refugee populations, prevalence of stress‐sensitive disorders has been reported to be as high as 90%.
