- Title
Ecological Approaches to the Use of Microbial Pathogens in Insect Control.
- Authors
Kalmakoff, James; Miles, J. A. R.
- Abstract
The article focuses on the use of microbial pathogens for the biological control of insects and pests. Biological control includes the use of predators, parasites, pathogens, pheromones, genetic manipulation, and habitat modification as control agents. It is stated that biological control of insect pest and vector populations has received intermittent attention for many years, but the early successes of DDT and other chemical insecticides caused a reduction in interest until the target organisms became resistant and the disastrous effects on both invertebrate and vertebrate non-target organisms were realized.
