- Title
THE "GOLD BAR OF HEAVEN": FRAMING OBJECTIVITY IN D. G. ROSSETTI'S POETRY AND PAINTING.
- Authors
HENDERSON, ANDREA
- Abstract
The article discusses the framing of objective and subjective values in Victorian era art and literature with a focus on the work of painter and poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The perception of subjective and objective characteristics in the femme fatale and Rossetti's depiction of ideal beauty are mentioned. The author argues that the iconic women in Rossetti's paintings and poems are presented in a manner which suggests that they are confined by male desire. The effect of replication or mass production on the value of the original painting, art patrons' desire for sets of coordinated paintings, and Rossetti's consolidation of his work under a signature style that could be produced by his assistants are also discussed.
