- Abstract
Illegal housing forms and evolution in Algeria: The case of two small towns (Guelaat Bou Sbaa and Bouati Mahmoud) The objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of socio‐economic, demographic, financial, and regulatory factors on the design of informal housing in the county (group of local municipalities) of Guelma (Algeria). To do this, 34 dwellings located in the two small towns (Guelaat Bou Sbaa and Bouati Mahmoud) were chosen to be studied. This evaluation was carried out through comparing actual and redesigned plans of existing housing units, during the legalization process supervised by the local administrations. Moreover, we carried out a spatial analysis of the two types of plans for each unit as well as a socio‐economic, demographic, financial, and regulatory study of the housing industry in the selected area. The results suggest the importance of outdoor space in existing dwellings and a trend towards more complexity and spatial interiority in projected dwellings. In addition, the design of housing was found to be dependent on the social factor, while it is independent of the economic, financial, and regulatory factor. Seemingly, economic and financial factors only influence the rate of completion and occupancy of housing, while regulation has no influence on the design of housing given the difficulty of its application.
