- Authors
Parker, James E.; Cushing, Barry E.
- Abstract
This article discusses on the issues surrounding the controversy concerning the amount to be reported by accountants as earnings per share, where the reporting entity has senior convertible securities outstanding in the U.S. Researchers' initial step in the argument is to propose a definition of usefulness against which the various alternatives for computing earnings per share can be evaluated. Secondly, the historical developments which precipitated the controversy over earnings per share are briefly reviewed, and two primary viewpoints in the controversy are summarized and contrasted. This analysis also reconciles the major alternative viewpoints with respect to the calculation of earnings per share and establishes a framework for reporting the most useful earnings per share data in any particular set of circumstances.
