- Abstract
The article discusses the causes and outcomes of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) in children. Cardiomyopathies are heart muscle disorders that affect diastolic function. DCM is characterized by a dilated left ventricular chamber in the heart and commonly leads to eventual heart failure. It states that the annual cost for caring for patients in the United States with this disease is estimated between $4 billion and $10 billion. The article contains a study conducted to provide information regarding causes and outcomes of DCM in children. The study concluded that race, sex, and age affect the disease's development. Outcomes vary according to heart failure status and age.
