- Abstract
The article discusses France's colonial efforts in the Americas in the early modern period. It notes the failed colonization attempts in Brazil, Florida, and Canada between 1540 and 1565, the French-supported voyage of exploration of the Atlantic coast of North America by Italian navigator Giovanni Verrazano, and the exploration of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence by explorer Captain Jacques Cartier. The efforts by French King François I to overturn the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494 which divided possession of the Americas between Spain and Portugal is detailed. Other topics include an overview of early modern European politics, the Reformation and Wars of Religion, and the writings of French authors including Marc Lescarbot, Michel de Montaigne, and François-Xavier de Charlevoix.
