- Abstract
This study investigates the effects of late intake valve closing and early exhaust valve opening on volumetric efficiency and lost work in a four-stroke spark ignition engine. The effects of pressure drop through intake and exhaust poppet valves were also studied. Two basic valve lift profiles - namely sinusoidal and instantaneous - were considered in this study. The effects of late intake valve closing and early exhaust valve opening were examined for various engine speeds, valve sizes, and valve discharge coefficients. Finally, an optimum intake valve closing angle to maximize the volumetric efficiency and an optimum exhaust valve opening angle to minimize lost work were established.
