- Abstract
The article explores the origin and development of the reputation of philosopher Niccolò Machiavelli from the 16th to the 19th century. Topics mentioned include his teaching of corruption, manipulation and political deceit and his character as a Republican defender of liberty and model of civic probity, his fame which equals the great Italian Renaissance figures, and appearance of Machiavellian characters on the Elizabethan stage as those that represents as villainy.
