- Abstract
Romania is one of the European countries where human hydatidosis is widespread, especially in south-western part of the country. We investigated 120 cases of human hydatidosis diagnosed and treated between 2004-2005 in Timisoara City in eight surgery clinics and one clinic of infectious diseases. Data were collected from hospital records and surgery protocols. Adults were most affected (83.3 %) and especially females (60 %). Rural population was affected by 66.7 %. Predominantly affected areas of the body were the liver (71.67 %), the lung (16.67 %), the kidney (5 %) and rarely the spleen, intersplenorenal region, thoracic wall and right psoas muscle (0.83 % each). Secondary hydatidosis was found in 6.66 % of cases. Multiple cysts were reported by 10 % of cases. Post-operative complications were found in 19.8 % of the cases with hepatic hydatidosis and in 40 % of the ones with lung hydatidosis. The average hospitalization period was 17.4 days per case, but in cases with complications, the average was 25.5.
