Neurocisticercosis en Latinoamérica ¿Un problema persistente, o en vías de extinción?

- Abstract
Objetivo: evaluar la evolución de la tasa de ingresos de pacientes con Neurocisticercosis (NC) en países de Latinoamérica incluyendo México, Ecuador, Brasil y Colombia. Antecedentes: la neurocisticercosis (NC) es una enfermedad parasitaria endémica en países de Asia, África y Latinoamérica. México fue uno de los países con más reportes de NC durante el siglo XX y uno de los primeros países en desarrollar proyectos de investigación multidisciplinarios, implementando estrategias de concientización y promoviendo el desarrollo de medidas preventivas pertinentes. Métodos: solicitamos al servicio de epidemiología del INNN la información de pacientes hospitalizados en Neurología, Neurocirugía y psiquiatría con el diagnóstico de NC (codificación B.69 /CIE-10), generando índices de hospitalizaciones por cada 100,000 habitantes. Complementando con datos de egresos hospitalarios de las instituciones públicas del país de segundo y primer nivel. El mismo procedimiento se siguió en Brasil, Ecuador y Colombia obteniendo información de sus índices de hospitalización por cada 100,000 habitantes de 1998 a 2019. Estas tendencias se correlacionaron con el Índice de Desarrollo Humano (IDH) de cada país. Núm. de registro del protocolo: 64/13 Resultados: se encontró una tendencia a la baja en cuanto a la taza de hospitalizaciones en tres de los países estudiados (México, Brasil y Ecuador) y un aumento en los casos en Colombia. Se encontró una fuerte correlación con el IDH en los países que documentaron descenso de sus respectivos años. Conclusiones: estos resultados muestran una disminución sostenida de la proporción de pacientes con NC en diferentes países de Latino américa. Toman relevancia particular en el contexto del plan de acción de la OPS/OMS de reducir las enfermedades tropicales desatendidas en la región. Es una noticia muy alentadora que no debe hacernos olvidar que, aunque las infecciones ocurren con menos frecuencia, siguen existiendo, y que los esfuerzos para la erradicación deben continuar.
