- Abstract
This article provides a comprehensive overview of various topics in pre-1500 urban history, focusing on different regions and aspects of urban life. It discusses conflicts such as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and invasion attempts in Ukraine, as well as the role of crowds in medieval Flanders and the importance of speech and secrecy in urban governance. The article also explores the use of beeswax in diplomatic gift-giving, the political significance of building projects like St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, and the position of women in history, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of gender inequity. Additionally, it delves into concubinage and female sex work in late medieval Mediterranean cities, food insecurity in medieval Irish towns, and the use of emotive rhetoric by city governments in medieval Castile. Overall, the article highlights the ongoing interest in themes such as gender, food security, international diplomacy, and urban dissent in pre-1500 European urban history research.
