- Abstract
This article examines the neglect of princely cities in South Asia in the study of urbanism. It argues that these cities, such as Hyderabad and Jaipur, have been overlooked despite their significant role in shaping urban development. The article explores the unique characteristics of princely urbanism, including state-directed planning and overlapping property rights, through case studies of Hyderabad and the conflicts between Nizami Hyderabad and British Secunderabad. It also discusses the conservation of the Hussain Sagar tank and the influence of cinema on public sociability in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. The article emphasizes the importance of studying princely cities to understand the urban history of South Asia.
