- Abstract
The Brazilian context presents opportunities for corruption research. As it may be seen in the media, several recent cases became public and are investigated. In practice, it is known that companies are valued in the market according to their expectations and actions. Therefore, it is believed that events involved in corruption negatively influence the market value, according to the signaling theory. Therefore, the aim of this study is to verify what is the relationship between engineering and construction companies in corruption schemes and their market value. To this end, this paper consists of a sample of 52 public and private companies with data collection between 2013 and 2017. The results show a negative relationship between companies that use the corruption scheme found out by the Lava Jato operation and the market value. In addition, corrupt companies have been found to have significant involvement with the government through loans taken from 2004 to 2014, when the scheme was in operation. The study contributes on verifying different perspectives of a scenario of extreme repercussion in the country and allied to a subject of academic and market interest, the market value of the companies.
