- Abstract
The article discusses hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) stress response to critical illness. Topics discussed include the function of ACTH hormone, the ACTH-cortisol dissociation, and the finding of a study of human adrenal glands on ACTH signaling. The possible occurrence of absolute and relative adrenal failure during critical illness is also noted.
