- Abstract
This paper considers some questions regarding the significance of traditional and subsistence fishing and the role of fishermen in traditional communities in the Colombian Caribbean region. Such questions contest and debate socio-anthropological and conservationists' views based on essentialists, outdated, universalists claims adverse to fishermen communities, in our case, those inhabiting or exploiting the Magdalena River swamps and riparian zone. A review and analysis of various concepts regarding traditional fishing, from the point of view of social sciences, at world, continental and regional levels was carried out. Later on, an ethnographic analysis of conflicts and experiences of fishermen in the Mompox branch is presented. Finally, it is defended why local knowledge is indispensable for understanding the relationship of fishermen with their environment.
