- Title
Rapid-response vaccines—does DNA offer a solution?
- Authors
Forde, Gareth M.
- Abstract
The article focuses on development of new vaccines for the treatment of influenza pandemics. In the face of such a pandemic, existing manufacturers are unlikely to have sufficient production capacity to produce new vaccines at the scale and speed required to protect public health. The U.S. has contracted for 4 million doses of influenza vaccine, with Italy and France anticipating the stockpiling of 2 million doses each and more recently Great Britain ordered 14 million doses of an anti-viral drug. In the case of influenza pandemic, vaccination will be one of the key interventions. Vaccines based on plasmid DNA offer a potential solution to the looming influenza vaccine crisis.
