- Abstract
Objective: To observe and document the accessory head of Flexor pollicis longus (ahFPL) muscle. Material and Methods: The arm and forearm region of a 55 year embalmed male cadaver during educational gross anatomy dissection. Results: We found an accessory head of the Flexor pollicis longus muscle. It was seen unilaterally in the left upper limb arising from the under surface of the flexor digitorum superficialis. It was terminated by inserting into the ulnar aspect of the proximal part of the tendon of Flexor pollicis longus (FPL). The ulnar vessels were found deep to this accessory head, anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) and median nerve (IVIN) were superficial to it. Conclusion: A rare anatomical variation of the FPL is described. Knowledge of the existence of muscle anomalies as well as the location of compression of neurovascular structures are useful in diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
