Female Curiosity towards Automobile Technology.
- Authors
Jalonen, Riikka
- Abstract
The article discusses women's participation in special courses about automobile technology during the 1970s in Finland. According to the author, these courses were a significant point of interaction for technology and gender in Finnish society. It is suggested that although these courses taught thousands of women drivers how to maintain and repair their own cars, they did not significantly change the perception that women drivers were less technologically able and knowledgeable than their male counterparts. Details on the content of the courses, including knowledge about different oils and fuels and practical skills such as changing tires, are presented. The role of the Suomen Autoliitto (The Automobile and Touring Club of Finland) in organizing the classes is also discussed.
