- Abstract
The goal for preparing teacher candidates for their own classrooms is for teacher preparation programs to provide curriculum and experiences that push them to think beyond just content knowledge. Teacher candidates should experience opportunities to make interdisciplinary, real-world, and cultural connections to their content knowledge. This paper highlights the project, Piecing Together Transformational Geometry Through Quilt Squares, and its instructional methods and collaboration between faculty in the Mathematics Department, Education Department, and University Libraries at Eastern Kentucky University. The collaboration was centered around two sections of a cross-listed geometry course for elementary and middle school teacher candidates in which teacher candidates deepened their understanding of geometric shapes and symmetry (reflection/line, rotation, translation) within the context of how different cultures influence the use, or lack thereof, of these geometric topics in items like blankets, rugs, and quilts. Additionally, this collaboration supported teacher candidates in honing their research skills with a specially created library module that guided them through how to search and find reputable sources.
