- Authors
Verhoeven, Ludo; Carlisle, Joanne F.
- Abstract
The article explains the significance of morphology in word identification and word spelling, which involve the coding and decoding of written and spoken linguistic units: phonological strings, morphemes, and words. Individual differences in word reading and spelling ability can be attributed to orthographic, phonological and semantic assimilations in memory. Many linguistic models, explain the impact of morphological decomposition on the processing of complex written words. There is ample experimental evidence that suggests, morphological structure is represented in the mental lexicon. The article cites assorted experiments and findings by scholars to establish a concrete relationship between morphology and linguistic development in children.
