- Abstract
The article explores the role of women in the religious affairs and politics during the Anglo-Saxon period. It presents the legacy of Æthelflæd who ruled Mercia in the English Midlands from 911 to 918 AD. The role of women in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom's resistance against the Viking armies is discussed, as well as the effect of a shift in the marriage patterns of the English kings on the status of women during the period.
