- Abstract
The article examines the effects of the historical trilogizing of the unified narrative of "The Lord of the Rings," by J.R.R. Tolkien on the trilogy form. Topics covered include how trilogizing the print text and film adaptations altered the substance of the narrative, how the trilogy format altered the way in which the stories are understood and the relation of the popularity of the trilogy format to a desire for clarifying overview and structure in narrative.
