- Title
The Social Costs of Worker Displacement.
- Authors
Hironimus-Wendt, Robert J.; Spannaus, Fred
- Abstract
This article examines the costs and consequences of worker displacement, defined as jobs lost through no fault of the worker. The authors claim 3 to 4 million workers are displaced annually. They contend the true social costs of these have remained unquantified. To rectify this, the author present a case study of a Firestone plant closing and the effects on the families and communities involved. About 9-10% of the respondents chose to retire after the plant closed, while about a third (34%) were receiving unemployment insurance compensation (U.I.) after one year.
