The article presents a critical analysis of the 19th-century Russian short story "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich," by Nikolai Gogol, focusing on the theme of identity. Topics addressed include Gogol's tendency to have literary characters change into their opposites throughout his narratives, the use of names within the short story, and the philosophy of the simile.
