- Abstract
This article focuses on the literary works of the Russian science fiction writers, Arkady Strugatsky and Boris Strugatsky (the Strutsgaskys). The Strugatsky brothers are rightly considered to be the best and the most popular Soviet science fiction writers. Their masterpieces, "Hard to Be a God," "Roadside Picnic" and "Monday Begins on Saturday" were written in the remote 1960s and 1970s and were hugely popular. Their last joint novel, "Burdened by Evil," was published in 1988. The much talked about connection between science fiction and the fairy tale is more evident in "Roadside Picnic" than in any other of the Strugatskys' novels. It is reminiscent of the underworld, and the stalkers' dangerous excursions there are the traditional fairy-tale journeys to the Kingdom of the Dead.
