- Title
Can We Improve School Safety in Earthquakes?
- Authors
Garcia, Luis E.
- Abstract
The article discusses the initiatives of members of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) on reinforcing the need to emphasize earthquake safety of reinforced concrete buildings. The article "Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Low-Rise Buildings in Regions with Infrequent Earthquakes," by Ahmed F. Hassan and Mete A.Sozen published in the January-February 1997 issue of "ACI Structural Journal" described a method that permits the screening of low-rise reinforced concrete buildings for potentially destructive behavior during a strong earthquake. The IPS-1 entitled "Essential Requirements for Reinforced Concrete Buildings," is a guide for buildings for of limited size and height based on ACI 318-02, published by ACI in 2002.
