- Abstract
In this article from the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, the authors present a zooarchaeological example from an early modern urban context in Antwerp, Belgium. They discuss the discovery of a deposit of thousands of complete fish bones that were preserved in a shallow depression beneath a rampart construction. The authors explore the origin of this deposit and argue that it represents a natural death assemblage of a local fish population, likely caused by a massive flooding event. This finding is significant because it provides a rare snapshot of a natural animal population, rather than the more common discarded food waste assemblages found in the archaeological record.
