- Title
FIELDING'S PETER POUNCE AGAIN.
- Authors
Varey, Simon
- Abstract
The article focuses on the character created by novelist Henry Fielding. In 1979, the author of this article noted that "Mr. Pounce" appeared in the Craftsman No. 721, 26 April 1740, and he suggested that this might have been a source for Fielding's Peter Pounce in the books "Jonathan Wild" and "Joseph Andrews." But Mr. Pounce appeared earlier, in Common Sense No. 57,4 March 1738. There is little doubt that Fielding's Peter Pounce is identifiable as the notorious Peter Walter. In the Craftsman, "Mr. Pounce, with a P." is responsible for organizing a band of ministerial journalists, but this task was under-taken not by Peter Walter, but by Treasury Solicitor Nicholas Paxton.
