- Abstract
Sigmund Freud unexpectedly directed the techniques he used to treat his patients to artworks after a while. At the end of the 19th century, Freud's attempt on the Works and personalities of artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Dostoevsky led to the emergence of psychoanalytic literary theory/criticism. Over time, names such as Carl Gustav Jung, Alfred Adler, Rollo May and Otto Rank contributed to the critique of psychoanalytic literature, which expresses a multidisciplinary field. Psychoanalytic literary criticism has also attracted the attention of literary psychology, which is a special field with its theories. Literary psychology means that literature and psychology, whose common points are human, benefit from each other. With common theories concerning these two fields of science, subjects such as work, author, poet, reader and writing process are discussed. The author, who produces any work, can be analyzed as a type or character with psychoanalytic theories and techniques. Psychological types and themes in literary works can be addressed with these techniques. In addition, the effect of literature and works on readers can be examined with the same psychoanalytic methods. Although the topics of study of literary psychology vary, it is more reasonable for literary researchers interested in literary psychology to study literary works using psychoanalytic theories and methods rather than writers, poets, and readers. All the elements created by the linguistic tools of literary works that try to construct an equivalent person and therefore an equivalent world fall within the research field of psychoanalytic literary theory. In this sense, psychoanalysis, which tries to find solutions to the depressions of people in the real world, can open new doors to understand the characters in literary works in a more detailed way. In this study, the novel Snow and Pearl by Nihan Kaya, who is aware of the possibilities offered by psychology, is discussed. While analyzing this work of Kaya, who reflects on the theory as well as the practice of art, with psychoanalytic methods, the focus was on the characters of the work rather than the author's personal life. In this study, which focuses on people, different psychoanalytic techniques were applied according to the theories pointed out by character behavior, not the theories of a single theorist.
