- Abstract
Based on the entrepreneurship resource and entrepreneurship scenario theories, this study combined the scale effect and external effect of population agglomeration and considered the dynamic characteristics of population agglomeration to construct a theoretical analysis framework, in which the population agglomeration had an impact on entrepreneurship resource acquisition, entrepreneurship opportunity finding, as well as entrepreneurship environment protection. In this framework, balanced panel data of 224 Chinese cities' urban district from 2008 to 2019 was used, and the historical built-up area was introduced as an instrument variable for population agglomeration, to empirically test the direct effects and indirect paths of the population agglomeration' s impact on urban entrepreneurship activities. The results showed that: ① Population agglomeration could significantly promote the increase of urban entrepreneurship activities. It would avoid underestimating the effect of population agglomeration on promoting entrepreneurship activities by dealing with the endogenous problem of population agglomeration. ② Population agglomeration had a significant lagging effect on the promotion of entrepreneurship activities, and the effective time boundary of the lagging effect was the lag three period. ③ Population agglomeration had a significant mediating effect by expanding market demand and driving infrastructure construction to promote entrepreneurship activities. An expansive analysis based on the city scale grouping showed that: ④ The population agglomeration of megacities and super-large cities had neither a significant promoting effect nor a significant crowding-out effect on entrepreneurship activities. ⑤ The population agglomeration of large cities and small and medium-sized cities had a significant effect on promoting entrepreneurship activities, but the decomposition of population agglomeration revealed that the increase in the employment population and built-up area of small and medium-sized cities had stagnated or even decreased. Based on the above results, this article suggests that: ① Approaches should be found to regard entrepreneurship support policies as basic public services to achieve full coverage for the permanent population. ② We should continue guiding the population to agglomerate in cities at all levels. Agglomeration of urban population is conducive to the expansion of the domestic market. ③ Infrastructure planning and construction should adapt to the speed and scale of population agglomeration and should be moderately implemented ahead of the speed of population agglomeration.
