- Abstract
Reflections of Meddah acting and tradition which have been the colour of storytelling art in Anatolia since the seventeenth century can also be seen in our time. However, neither the aesthetics of Meddah with the one-actor plays, nor one-actor plays with "middlebrow" comedies such as presently popular stand-up shows, talk-shows and sit-coms are to be confused. Anatolian Meddah acting is a specific type of acting which is the result of an aesthetic synthesis of various cultural factors. Therefore, while utilizing the aesthetics of Meddah, the story must be brought to front by proceeding from the actuality as content, and mimicry which forms this story must be used skillfully. Two examples of contemporary reflections of Meddah acting are "Zilli Sih" (Sheik with Bells) and "Kadin Olmak" (To be a Woman). "Zilli Sih" is the reflection of traditional Meddah on the level of text. "Kadin Olmak" is a theatrical presentation of Zeynep Oral's book in which the author narrates memories, sorrow, pain, in brief, problems of women who met in Nariobi, in a world in which civilization and barbarism go hand in hand. It is possible to find reflections of aesthetic effects of Meddah acting and the documentary technique also in this play which is a conflation of narration and dramatization.
