- Title
Oro, monas y papagayos: el indiano en el teatro del Siglo de Oro.
- Authors
GONZÁLEZ-BARRERA, JULIÁN
- Abstract
One of the most attractive figures of Spanish Golden Age theatre is the 'indiano'. From a social point of view, these figures proved quite difficult to classify for Hapsburg Spain: they were a minority who returned to the Peninsula immensely wealthy following their American enterprise. Despite his success, the 'indiano' is frequently mocked on stage by masters and servants alike. Nevertheless, a clear evolution in the portrayal of this character is perceptible and accompanies the historical, social and economic notion that sustained it: the 'indiano' of flesh and blood.
