- Abstract
The study aims at evaluating the conversation skill among the preliminary-level students of Arabic for speakers of other languages at the Language Center at the University of Jordan. It also aims at identifying the conversation skills necessary for these learners. The sample of the study consisted of 30 students, both males and females, in the preliminary level. To achieve the objectives of the study, a questionnaire and a test for the conversation skill were prepared. The researcher uses the descriptive analytical approach. The study gave a number of results; the most important of which is the identification of conversation skills among the students of Arabic for speakers of other languages in the preliminary level as well as the absence of conversation skills among learners in addition to the absence of proficiency among them. There are no statistically significant differences due to sex (male, female). The study highlights the importance of using the conversation skills set forward by the findings of the study. It also recommends evaluating all skills in general and the conversation skill in particular. It also recommends identifying the conversation skills necessary for the students of Arabic for speakers of other languages at all levels as well as holding training sessions to train teachers of Arabic for speakers of other languages to teach them how to evaluate Arabic language skills in general and the conversation skill in particular as well as familiarizing them with the conversation skills, their importance, and how necessary it is to improve them.
