- Abstract
The production of organic matter by the phytoplankton was measured in some Austrian lakes, first of all in the Lunzer Untersee. 7 series of experiments were made in this particular lake throughout the year. In the period May-October the rate of gross production varied between 100 and 220 mg C assimilated per m² per day. About 30 g C is being assimilated per year per m² (gross production). The rate of production in the two lakes Atter See and Mondsee, where only single series of experiments were initiated, seems to be a little higher than in Lunzer Untersee. Finally 3 series of experiments are presented from Lunzer Obersee, a lake of quite another type. The numbers of experiments were, however, too few for even a preliminary valuation of that particular lake. The grants made by the CARLSBERG FOUNDATION are gratefully acknowledged.
