- Abstract
The article discusses dance and music lessons that were given to girls who studied at boarding schools in England at the turn of the nineteenth century. Topics include how music and dance lessons for girls were considered important for the construction of feminine identity and gentility, and debates over the employment of dancing masters associated with the stage in boarding schools. The blurred boundaries between dance and music education for girls at boarding schools are also discussed.
