- Abstract
Visuality is a key term for understanding the social and cultural transformations of the nineteenth century. The technological developments of this period saw an "age of visuality" develop around realist European literature, which was a crucial influence on the emergence and evolution of Ottoman literary modernization. This effect was clearly evident in the Ottoman-Turkish poetry of the late nineteenth century in which realistic representation provided a justification for breaking with classical literary conventions. The new emphasis on visual reality was particularly evident in nature poems and occurred in two stages: a) Early literary innovators attempt to promote visual realism in the Western sense, but are hampered by the interference of classical Ottoman literary conventions with their own distinctive realism. b) New literary conventions begin to eliminate classical conventions as visuality gains acceptance in public space. This interplay and tension between the old and the new can be seen in Abdülhak Hâmid's, Recaizâde Mahmud Ekrem's, Cenap Şahabeddin's and Tevfik Fikret's poems.
