- Abstract
The article investigates the effectiveness of the quality control chart as a method of exploring the work-relatedness of asthma using the peak expiratory flow (PEF) as the variable of interest, by recording the PEF measurements of several workers suspected of having occupational asthma. Results show that the chart detected and characterized increased variation in PEF between the periods when the employee is at workplace and away from workplace, using the ratio of average daily PEF diurnal variation at work to the baseline average diurnal variation. Findings reveal that the quality control chart is an effective and affordable method which can be used to detect whether a worker suffers from occupational asthma.
