- Abstract
The reflection on the relationships between "Italian art" and "German art" accompanies Longhi throughout his activity. To date, the ideological background of this reflection remains largely unexplored. This essay of mine, which devotes so to say "monographic" attention to an extensive review published by Longhi in «la Voce» in January 1914, aims to contribute to the study of certain historical and political premises hitherto neglected. The occasion of Longhi's review, which takes stock of the relationship between Italian and "Nordic" art, is the publication in Munich of Arthur Moeller van den Bruck's voluminous Die italienische Schönheit (1913). Today known as the ideologue of the "young conservatives" gathered in Juni-Klub in Berlin, Moeller was at the time friend of Theodor Däubler and editor of the Opera omnia by Dostoevskij in Germany. The reasons for Piero's appreciation are, in Moeller, different from those of Longhi, who publishes the essay Piero dei Franceschi e lo sviluppo della pittura veneziana (again) in 1914. However not incomparable, and indeed such as to draw attention to Moeller as a today forgotten (yet illustrious) precursor of Piero's modernist fame in Europe in the period of the entre-deux-guerres.
