- Abstract
The forms of exploitation of rural areas of the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula have been preserved to this day. These resources have been managed collectively by various institutions of governance. This form of management is particularly relevant in terms of livestock and forestry. It is a landscape that has undergone a long-term process of formation connected to the consolidation of a village network around which the territory was organized, based on a complementary exploitation of agricultural and livestock resources. This paper presents the first approach to the study of the management of communal areas in the Cantabrian Mountains and the Basque Country during the Roman era and the Middle Age. These periods witnessed important transformations that partially shaped the contemporary landscape.
