- Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the contribution of the work-based learning module given in Sakarya University Human Resource Management Department (SAU HRM) to employability and job finding processes of the students. This research covers the years 2018, 2019 and 2020, and the universe of the study consists of SAU HRM students who have taken the work-based learning course in these three years. Openended questions were sent to the students through an online questionnaire, and 425 out 525 responded to it on a voluntary basis. The notable findings of the study are as follows: First, almost 30% of the students received job offers from the company they worked for. Students who could not get a job offer highlighted two main reasons: firmrelated issues and student-related competency issues. While lack of vacant positions and not having a proper corporate structure are the main reasons for the firm-related issues; foreign language proficiency is one of the most frequently-cited barriers for students. However, macro factors such as the economic crisis and pandemic have also been found to be effective in limiting employment opportunities. During the workbased learning, the students indicated the use of various software and the lack of foreign language as the competencies they felt the most lacking. Secondly, the structure of the organizations where the work-based learning is carried out was examined. Two points are salient here, most of the organizations are large-scale manufacturing companies and these companies are mostly located in Sakarya and other cities in the Marmara Region. Considering the employment capacity of the region, it may be suggested that both the job search and job offer processes of the students are adversely affected by this regionalization.
