The essay builds on a 2010 article entitled "The Writing of Disaster in Haiti: Signifying Cataclysm from Slave Revolution to Earthquake" by Deborah Jenson to use an interdisciplinary approach to disaster studies which considers political, social, and historical issues in Haiti, and more broadly, across the Caribbean region. Topics include the 2010 Haitian earthquake, the Haitian Revolution, race relations, and poverty.
