- Abstract
The article discusses the rise of Norwich, England as a literary and intellectual center during the eighteenth century and explores how the city became an important literary center as it previously lacked an established literary tradition. The author considers how the Dissenting Octagon Chapel, the Norwich Theatre Royal, and local newspapers and periodicals helped to inspire Norwich's intellectual environment. Other subjects include Romanticism, the rise of education and literacy, Norwich's economic development, and religious dissent. An overview of 18th century British historiography is presented.
