- Authors
McAlpin, Mary
- Abstract
The article discusses the character of Cécile in the 18th-century French novel "Les Liaisons dangereuses" by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Cécile's representation of the psychological and physiological norms for individuals of her gender, age, and social class is noted, mentioning that the suggestions by the character of the Marquise de Merteuil that she is lacking in mental capacity are incorrect, despite his notable ability to correctly judge human psychology. The argument is presented that Merteuil's misunderstanding of Cécile is foundational to the message of the novel with regard to the relations between men and women.
