- Authors
Detmering, Robert
- Abstract
The article focuses on information literacy in a political and social context made accessible through popular films. It states the connection of information access and political critique through the analysis of films including "Thank You for Smoking" by Jason Reitman, "Burn after Reading" by Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, and "W" by Oliver Stone. It tells that the work of Reitman asserts that information reliability depends on one's ability to make sound arguments. On the other hand, it says that "Burn after Reading" is a satire depicting networks of political information which dictates what kind of information can be accessed by the public. It also stresses that popular films can encourage students to think critically with regards to the political and social dimensions of information literacy.
