- Abstract
The IDS exhibit "How is language investigated?" is part of an exhibition on the museum ship "MS Wissenschaft" and encourages visitors to engage with linguistic rules, variations, and their own linguistic behavior. The exhibit aims to introduce empirical linguistics through playful methods and promote awareness of language and linguistic education. It is aimed at a broad audience aged 12 and older and takes into account different language and educational backgrounds. The exhibit focuses on the communication of linguistic variation and has selected three variations to illustrate the peculiarities of language and language variation. The exhibit showcases examples of these variations and uses observation, surveys, and experiments as data collection methods. The Forum Deutsche Sprache (German Language Forum) of the Institute for the German Language in Mannheim will serve as a permanent institution for science communication. It plans to have an interactive permanent exhibition, special exhibitions, and event formats on various linguistic topics. Visitors can receive interesting information about their own language usage through "language donations" and citizen science projects, and provide researchers with insights into their language use. The Forum Deutsche Sprache will provide further information at www.forumdeutschesprache.de.
